Port Grimaud was conceived by the architect
François Spoerry (1912-1999) who created
also the Tower of Europe at Mulhouse and
several other projects: fitting out of the belfry
of Amiens, Porto Cervo in Sardinia , Port-Louis
in Louisiana, Puerto Escondido in Mexico,
…
He was inspired by the rich cultural and architectural
heritage of the Mediterranean area
when combining the Provençal “art de vivre”
with most progressive construction methods.
The birth of the “lake village” started with the
acceptance of the planning permission, the
14th June 1966. One of the loveliest squares
of the village is the “place du 14 juin” which
commemorates the historical date.
Four years before, in 1962, François Spoerry
had discovered this marshy area which was
appreciated by the hunters of Grimaud. At
that time any shipping was impossible due to
the shallows of the ground and building was
not advisable either.
